GSOTM Irish Traditional Music Competition for Post-Primary Schools

Location: Edmund Rice College, Hightown Road, Glengormley
* Participating school groups should arrive no later than 9.30am.
PRIZES:
1st Tier
1st prize: £750 in musical instruments from Matchetts Music, Belfast
2nd prize: £500 in musical instruments from Matchetts Music, Belfast
2nd Tier
1st prize: £500 in musical instruments from Matchetts Music, Belfast
2nd prize: £250 in musical instruments from Matchetts Music, Belfast
The competition aims to promote and encourage the teaching of Irish Traditional Music in secondary level schools in the Greater Belfast area.
There will be two tiers/levels of competition to reflect that the teaching of music, the numbers studying music, and/or Irish Traditional Music is greater in some schools than others.
It is hoped that this competition will encourage all schools to have Irish Traditional Music as part of their music provision
We ask schools to place themselves in one of the tiers, however all entries will be pre-assessed and GSOTM will be the final arbiters as to which tier each entrant is placed.
This is an Irish Traditional Music competition.
Please note: there is no registration fee however there will be an entrance fee of £2 per child and £5 per adult on the day.

Information requested in online registration is to allow GSOTM to determine and confirm appropriate tier for each school.

Groups will be expected to play a set of tunes of at least 5 mins and no more than 8 mins duration.

Minimum number in group is 4. maximum number is 16. Name, age and instrument of all group members to be provided. (schools may wish to amalgamate as GSOTM will accept joint entries)

Marking criteria: Groups will be judged and marked on – accuracy, stylistic awareness, ensemble skill, interest, variety of arrangement, quality of arrangement, variety of traditional instruments, instruments considered traditional (similar marking scheme as at a fleadh).
